Objects in Mirror

My best friend texted me, in the midst of nostalgic-natured chit-chat, “What are the names of the different streets you have lived on?”

I texted back, “In what city?”

My wanderlust years left the post office scrambling to keep up with all of my Official Change of Address forms.

And I was on the move again.

“Chicago.”

I responded by listing more than twenty streets in Chicago proper and sat in wonder at all the times I’d packed my bags and left behind another home I’d built with my bare hands.

But I was careful not to wonder too long, lest the past, with all its foils and failures, threaten to taint the future.

For objects in any rear-facing mirror can appear closer than they truly are, if you stare at them too long.

On the road again, back to Chicago, facing forward with feet placed confidently in faith.

“Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14
