The Mountains are Calling

John Muir famously said, “The mountains are calling and I must go.”

I heard the same call and felt the same way. They called to me from afar, promising fresh air and early morning walks.

They called.

I went.

And they were wonderful.

Then I was called somewhere else.

And only now, when I’m far from the mountains that earned my early love, I have discovered that John Muir had more to say.

The full quote is actually: “The mountains are calling and I must go, and I will work on while I can, studying incessantly.” (Circa 1923)

It wasn’t that the mountains called that mattered. It was that when he heard his calling, he obeyed and toiled and strove.

Wherever the Lord calls, may we follow, by His grace and for His glory.

“For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.” 1 Timothy 4:10
